LSR Molding vs. Compression Molding: Which is Right for Your Project?

When developing a new custom silicone component, one of the most critical decisions is selecting the manufacturing process. The two dominant production methods are Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) Injection Molding and Traditional Compression Molding. Selecting the incorrect process can lead to excessive tooling costs or unmet dimensional tolerance thresholds.

1. Compression Molding: Cost-Effective & Reliable

Compression molding is the oldest and simplest silicone fabrication method. Raw silicone compound, premixed with colorants and vulcanization agents, is pre-formed into "charges," placed manually into heated mold cavities, and pressed under heavy pressure.

2. LSR Injection Molding: Precision & Automation

Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) injection molding is a highly automated process. Two raw liquid components (A and B) are pumped via a static mixer directly into a closed, heated mold, where vulcanization takes place rapidly.

3. Decision Matrix: How to Choose

As a general rule, we recommend:

Choose Compression Molding if your target quantity is under 20,000 pcs per year, your part geometry is relatively simple, and you want to minimize upfront tooling costs.

Choose LSR Molding for medical-grade parts, complex micro-geometries, or high-volume projects (>100,000 pcs per year) where the automated cycle speeds easily offset the initial tooling investment.
